What kind of over-the-counter medicine can I give my dog for arthritis?

I have a 5 year old 90 lb dog that has arthritis in his back legs. I was wondering what over-the-counter human medicine and dosage I can give him for the pain. I am not able to take him to the vet at this time. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Some of the natural ingredients found to be beneficial in canine arthritis are:
Devil’s Claw (native exclusive to Africa) – Scientific research in the West has confirmed the benefits of Devil’s Claw in supporting muscle, cartilage and joint health. It is also well known as a digestive tonic and is beneficial in the support of liver and gall bladder health.
Arthrospira platenis (Spirulina) is a single celled micro-organism found in the sea and is widely used as a source of chlorophyll. Widely used for its nutritive properties, Spirulina contains protein, vitamins (including B12 and folic acid) and carotenoids. This sea algae has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years as a tonic to support energy and vitality, as well as healthy liver and immune system functioning and all around systemic health.
Calcium fluoride (6cH) is a biochemic tissue salt which helps to support routine elasticity to all cells and body tissues and maintain easy movement in the body.
Natrium sulphate (6cH) is a biochemic tissue salt also known as the ‘cell cleanser’ and also helps to maintain balance in all body fluids. It is invaluable for a range of uses, and helps to support the health of the liver, pancreas, urinary tract system, respiratory system and digestive system and is particularly useful for maintaining bone health.
Glucosamine sulphate is a crucial element in the support and maintenance of healthy cartilage, which provides cushioning at the end of the bones and between joints. Due to promising results in a number of clinical trials, this nutritional substance has been approved in more than 70 countries. It is also useful in easing normal age-related stiffness, and studies have demonstrated that this supplement is as effective in animals as it is in humans.

The only human over the counter medication that is safe for dogs with arthritis is glucosamine, with chondroitin & msm.
No pain meds are safe and can cause internal bleeds.
if you absolutely cannot take him to the vet, buffered aspirin (preferably buy it at petco/petsmart or another pet store). Aspirin is not recommended nor are any other NSAIDS because your dog can get a life-threating allergic reaction. Use sparingly, then get some pain killers made especially for dogs at the vet—these are not that expensive!!
You can give him baby aspirin. You can also give him the same joint-building supplements that humans get at the health food store — they were actually used on farm animals before people started using them! The supplements use collagen, chondroitin and glucosamine sulphate, MSM, devil’s claw, white willow bark (natural type of aspirin actually).
If you really want to help your dog, find a pet-friendly Homeopathic doctor who can probably cure this problem permanently.
Add silicon / silica to the suggestion of glucosamine, chondroitin & msm.
IT is cheapest to get a 50 lb bag of *food grade* diatomaceous earth, which is high in water soluble silica.
Some feed stores carry it, or, you can order it online. It is used in grains & flours to keep them flowing smoothly, and it is also used as a natural nontoxic pesticide. It was discovered by accident that animals eating the grains it was in, were getting over chronic illnesses, & their owners began taking it themselves. Silica / silicon is great for the joints. A workmate of my spouse who had had hip replacement, was in such pain that he was arranging for knee replacements, too. But, he tried the ‘FGDE’, and in a few weeks, quit limping in pain, & abandoned the idea of surgery.
Some places sell it in smaller containers, but, you pay a higher price per pound.
You can take it yourself, feed it to all your pets, & use it as a nontoxic insecticide.
Plus, it never ‘goes bad’. I give it to our two large dogs (Rottweiller; Shepherd-Bull cross), about 6-7 years old I guess, & they show absolutely no signs of arthritis. Their coats are shinier & smoother now from it, too. It improves digestion, by keeping food particles from clumping, & I find I can feed 1/4 to 1/3 less, & they don’t loose weight even in winter.
You don’t want to kill the pain, because if he doesn’t hurt, he’ll move more & cause the joint more damage. Get him some nutritional joint support, & feed it to him regularly with his other food. I can’t post the links, because they are all on commercial sites, but will email them to you upon request (email me with link to this Q, & request the links).

if your dog is in pain, you need proper pain medication from your vet.
The first thing I’ll recommend is pet supplement that contains Glucosamine which really help to reduce the pain and inflammation of the joints and restore mobility in your dog.
There are also others like Chondroitin and 3 Omega Fatty Acids that can also help however supplements that contains Glucosamine has proven to work better.
My dog who used to have arthritis no longer experience any pain in the joints and his energy levels has also increased after taking a Glucosamine pet supplement. I’m using a brand called Arthro-Ionx.
