What is the best pain management advice for labor?

I know breathing really helps, but I need a veteran to tell me how they made it through. Please the is my first baby and I'm really trying to make it though with the least amount of pain as possible...or the least amount of stress.

listen to soft music , look at relaxing videos or pictures, squeeze ur husbands hand till it breaks, which usually happens lol. also to make it hurt less, some doctors will break the water early, so that could help too.
breathing and relaxation, bring in a soothing cd that you can concentrate on during contractions, and a picture does work too, when your having a contraction you really breath and remain relaxed and concentrate on somthing.
it really does work!
Just be prepared. If you are prepraed adn ready you can handle ANYTHING.
Remember that there is an end to the pain, and it’s not far away. Keep breathing and try to visualize or focus on something that is calming to you. It can be absolutely anything, and you’ll probably figure it out once the time hits. I had no plan for that. It also helped me to focus on the fact that I would be meeting my son soon, which is THE most amazing thing any person can ever experience.
I just closed my eyes each time I had a bad pain and concentrated. I tried to focus on anything else besides the pain like holding the baby or seeing him for the first time. I also brought my own pillow from home and ended up clutching onto it for dear life. I think having something familiar was nice and comforting. Are you opting for the epidural? My doctor gave it to me about an hour after starting to feel major pain. I was in labor for 23 hours and it really never was that bad. That one hour was the hardest part to get through. The rest was easy.
Do anything that will keep your mind off of the pain. I walked around alot and swayed back and forth in place. I also was looking out the window in the hospital room at all the people and cars going by. It just makes you think about something else. Walking helps take away some of the pain too. Always use good breathing techniques. Use deep slow breaths
