My PM dr says he doesnt prescribe narcotics. Why is that? He diagnosed me with grade 2 spondylolisthesis and pars inticulars (sp) a birth defect that can cause severe pain as you get older. He gave me ultram er 200mg once a day I took 2 in one day and it's like eating a tic tac. Should I find a new PM Dr?

Due to all the problems in the US with law suits and narcotic sales, doctors have become very nervous. If you have a ligitamate issue I would look for a Pain Management Doctor that will help manage your pain. My pain management doctor is also a anthesologist and will give injections in my very painful areas that last several weeks. I do not advocate for using tons of pain medications, but pain MANAGEMENT is not dealing with pain out of control, but treating it before it is to that stage. I would look on the internet, for a good pain management doctor. Do not plan on walking into a doctor the first appointment and being given 40 mg x 4 oxycotin a day at your first appointment. He/She will want all your medical records, tests, CATS and MRI. but don’t give up. God Bless ReggieR
Some Pain Management doctors may choose not to prescribe narcotics because of concerns that relate to the laws in your State.
I would recommend getting another opinion from another Pain Management doctor, preferably from someone that does not share the same office of the doctor that you go to for care to see what they say. I would also recommend asking your primary care physician if they know of some other Pain Management doctors in your area that may be comfortable with prescribing narcotics to see what they know.
Narcotics are so addictive and so many DR’s have had their license suspended or revoked that it is hard to find on that will prescribe them anymore. There are other non narcotics he can prescribe you that work better than Ultram. You do not need narcotics.
The only reason dr’s don’t prescribe the "heavy duty" drugs like traquilizers, narcotics, sleeping pills, etc. is ’cause they don’t want to take responsibility, that’s all. If one patient out of ten happens to abuse it and become addicted, all the other doctors will criticize him and ridicule him like school grade children. I take neurontin, it has another name to gaba… something or other it’s really good, so if neurontin doesn’t do it for you, make sure you have a full bottle w/ refills of your current medication and find another dr. Word of warning narcontics have been known to have a reduced affect over time, but in the here and now, I think you need it.
