If you do not have imaging tests such as x-rays, MRI's, CT scans, or an official diagnosis like Cancer or Lupus to support your pain claim, they are more than likely going to send you out for more testing. Plus, sometimes, pain medication is not the appropriate treatment. For example, no pain management doctor is going to prescribe a narcotic to treat migraines since they can cause some pretty nasty rebound headaches and only make the issue worse. Once you have an official diagnosis they will evaluate the situation and figure out if medication is needed or if you would be a good candidate for epidural injections, massage, acupuncture, etc. Just because these doctors are in the business of managing pain does not mean you will get narcotic pain medicine.
